Future Tours

Other Tours
Hopefully someday Jack or I will get around to expanding the backyard tour using the orignal tour written in HyperCard, or else using the Marcomedia project by Jon Peterson, Jeff Lee, and Neil Mauskar, since neither of these previous HyperCard or Macromedia Director tours seem to be used much at all. In addition, I have a mind to either work on a tour of the Saint Mary's Hall campus or a small portion of San Antonio's Salado Creek.

Other Features
If I ever got around to having the time for these things, I would add the following features:

  • Photo-Essays
The photo-essays are a set of pages with a picture and an essay describing a region shown on the main map. For the sake of download time there will usually be just one good picture; for the sake of variety different essays will have different authors. From a photo-essay, the user can leave the tour, return to the main map, go to the official home page of that area (if available), or walkthrough the area. An example of the layout of a photo-essay can be found at the link below. N.B., this is only a layout as of now--thus no links will be enabled and the image and text are not representative of any area [although I do like the quote].

  • Java Client Implementation
It would be really nice to rewrite the bulk of the tour as a Java client--doing so would allow all sorts of animation, music, and speech, in addition to reducing the number of redundant information on the server. If I ever do have to do a project in Java programming, I'd probably write a Java based tour engine that would approach the quality of Myst, but run on the web.
