This was a fun collaborative project that I worked on with a couple members of my committee and a group in France that did some great isotopic work on our stream samples from Niwot Ridge.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-248\" title=\"fig2_n_inputs_color\" src=\"http:\/\/anthony.darrouzet-nardi.net\/scienceblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/fig2_n_inputs_color.jpg\" alt=\"fig2_n_inputs_color\" width=\"450\" height=\"515\" srcset=\"http:\/\/scienceblog.darrouzet-nardi.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/fig2_n_inputs_color.jpg 450w, http:\/\/scienceblog.darrouzet-nardi.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/fig2_n_inputs_color-262x300.jpg 262w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I used some of the spatial data from my study site to estimate the relative contributions of two major inputs: winter atmospheric deposition of N on snow and N fixation. You can see that there is a somewhat complementary relationship in which there is a\u00a0greater abundance of N-\ufb01xing plants\u00a0in areas with less snow and substantial snow inputs in\u00a0areas with low N \ufb01xer abundance.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the isotopic data showed that:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>During the initial\u00a0phases of snowmelt, mixing model end members for\u00a0oxygen isotopes in nitrate (NO3-) indicated that a\u00a0substantial quantity of NO3- is transported downhill\u00a0into the forested subalpine without being assimilated\u00a0by soil microbes.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Another paper from my dissertation just came out in Biogeochemistry.
