{"id":1376,"date":"2012-09-25T16:26:28","date_gmt":"2012-09-25T20:26:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/anthony.darrouzet-nardi.net\/scienceblog\/?p=1376"},"modified":"2018-05-21T13:24:54","modified_gmt":"2018-05-21T17:24:54","slug":"earlier-spring-in-the-arctic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/scienceblog.darrouzet-nardi.net\/?p=1376","title":{"rendered":"Earlier spring in the Arctic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There was a well reported <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/2012\/09\/24\/161701420\/as-arctic-ice-melts-so-does-the-snow-and-quickly\">story<\/a> on NPR yesterday about recent trends in Arctic snow melt:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Derksen and colleague\u00a0Ross Brown\u00a0have produced a study, which has been accepted for publication in\u00a0<em>Geophysical Research Letters<\/em>, that documents a dramatic increase in the speed of this snowmelt. It turns out that in May and June, snow across the far north is disappearing fast.\u00a0&#8220;It&#8217;s decreasing at a more rapid rate than summer sea ice,&#8221; Derksen says. &#8220;So the loss of snow cover across the Arctic is really as big an issue as the loss of sea ice.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div id=\"res161706644\">\n<div>It is nice to have more confirmation of this trend since it is a major premise of our Arctic <a href=\"http:\/\/scienceblog.darrouzet-nardi.net\/?p=157\">field experiment<\/a>. \u00a0I don&#8217;t think the paper is available online yet.<\/div>\n<div>There is some interesting data from our specific site, Imnavait Creek, showing that in recent years, there has actually been a lack of early snowmelt events:<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><img src=\"http:\/\/anthony.darrouzet-nardi.net\/scienceblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/imnav_snowmelt.jpg\" alt=\"Image\" width=\"350\" \/><\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s snowmelt day of year on the vertical axis and calendar year on the horizontal.
