One of the unexpectedly interesting parts was seeing the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Muskingum_River_Power_Plant\">Muskingum River Power Plant<\/a>, a massive old coal-burning operation. It took the better part of an hour to canoe past the enormous premises.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/anthony.darrouzet-nardi.net\/scienceblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/P1000383.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-786\" title=\"P1000383\" src=\"http:\/\/anthony.darrouzet-nardi.net\/scienceblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/P1000383.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"338\" srcset=\"http:\/\/scienceblog.darrouzet-nardi.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/P1000383.jpg 450w, http:\/\/scienceblog.darrouzet-nardi.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/P1000383-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I knew from my dissertation research that these coal-fired plants, particularly the ones in the Ohio River basin, were the biggest point sources of N deposition and acid rain in the country, the results of which can be seen by this map of rainfall pH from <a href=\"http:\/\/nadp.sws.uiuc.edu\/\">NADP<\/a>\u00a0(the plant is right around that 4.4 in southeastern Ohio).<\/p>\n<p><img src=\"http:\/\/snr.unl.edu\/data\/images\/climate\/NADP_pH2008_medium.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Wikipedia <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Muskingum_River_Power_Plant\">confirmed<\/a> that this plant is in fact one of the larger polluters in the area.\u00a0It was interesting to see the sci-fi-looking machinery and giant piles of coal up close.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/anthony.darrouzet-nardi.net\/scienceblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/P1000386.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-787\" title=\"P1000386\" src=\"http:\/\/anthony.darrouzet-nardi.net\/scienceblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/P1000386.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"338\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"http:\/\/scienceblog.darrouzet-nardi.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/P1000386.jpg 338w, http:\/\/scienceblog.darrouzet-nardi.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/P1000386-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 338px) 100vw, 338px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In addition to the power plant, we also enjoyed some great fall color.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/anthony.darrouzet-nardi.net\/scienceblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/P1000394.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-788\" title=\"P1000394\" src=\"http:\/\/anthony.darrouzet-nardi.net\/scienceblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/P1000394.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"338\" srcset=\"http:\/\/scienceblog.darrouzet-nardi.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/P1000394.jpg 450w, http:\/\/scienceblog.darrouzet-nardi.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/P1000394-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I went on a fun canoe trip on the Muskingum River a couple weekends ago.
