Status of the Artifex servers and of Artifex.org, 2002.01.03

An outline of what's been going on the past few months

In the past few months, a number of improvements have happened with the artifex servers. I'll outline them here:
- SSH was updated our primary server, solar.artifex.org
- A secure webmail system (still in testing) was installed on our primary server. For information, see http://artifex.org/lib/squirrelmail.html
- Ben Eloy moved the old artifex server (formerly earth.artifex.org) to a permanent internet connection in California, bought a big hard drive for it, and replaced its power supply. Following the addition of new RAM, it will become a remote, failover backup of all user and system data on the primary artifex server.
- Jack Lange and I updated the website, and added a number of new Library documents about using the Artifex server.

Meanwhile, a few steps were taken with Artifex.org, the non-profit organization.
- A program was written to make it easy for people to sign up as members of Artifex.org, and for existing members to easily edit their contact information.
- Artifex.org got an Employer Identification Number from the IRS, so that it can set up a bank account in its own name. Ben Eloy, the Treasurer, will set it up this winter.
- Several Library documents about the organization and its proceedings were written/revised.
- The board met on January first, established a calendar for the next two quarter's meetings, and established a schedule for the election of this year's member trustee.
